With the photo campaign, ProLOEWE, the network of LOEWE research projects in Hesse, which also includes emergenCITY, drew attention in social networks and on its website to how many women are already working in various areas and positions in LOEWE basic research in Hesse. “We want to encourage many more girls and women to find their way into science,” said the network. A total of 38 women took part and made their pictures available for a joint photo collage.
Six female emergenCITY-scientists also took part to encourage women and girls to pursue their careers in science: Yi Wang from Communications Engineering, PI Britta Schmalz and Mahshid Khazaeiathar from Engineering Hydrology and Water Management, Michaela Leštáková from Fluid Systems, Syrine Adala and PI Carolin Bock from Entrepeneurship.
On December 22, 2015, the International Day of Women and Girls in Science was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly to strengthen the advancement of women and girls in science and counteract the effect of the “leaky pipeline”. This phenomenon describes that the higher the academic career level, the lower the representation of women in science. In addition, women are recognized for their central roles in science and basic research.
