At their spring festival on May 27, the Friends of TU Darmstadt presented Jasin Machkour, a former scientist at the LOEWE Center emergenCITY, with the award for the best dissertation in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology in 2024 at TU Darmstadt. He had defended his dissertation with summa cum laude in August under the title “Development of Fast Machine Learning Algorithms for False Discovery Rate Control in Large-Scale High-Dimensional Data.”

The members of the Friends of TU Darmstadt particularly praised the work’s high scientific relevance, sound methodology, clear presentation of complex content, and broad spectrum of potential applications – from engineering applications and biomedical analyses to issues in finance.

“This award is a great honor for me and a significant recognition of the intensive work I’ve put in over the past few years. It motivates me to continue working on complex issues with curiosity and perseverance and to develop solutions that bring real value to society,” says Jasin Machkour, a postdoc in the Robust Data Science Group at the Institute of Communications Engineering.

Terminating-Random Experiments Selector (T-Rex)

The “Terminating-Random Experiments Selector (T-Rex)” method he presented in his dissertation helps control a user-defined false discovery rate in large-scale, high-dimensional data while enabling rapid selection of variables. This is necessary, for example, for rescue robots to use radar data to quickly locate missing people under rubble after an earthquake.

His doctorate was supported by the DFG project REFOCUS (2019-2022) and the LOEWE Center emergenCITY, and supervised by Professors Michael Muma, head of the Robust Data Science Group at the Institute of Communications Engineering at TU Darmstadt and emergenCITY-PI, and Daniel Palomar, professor at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
